Full roof strip and refurbishment
Todays job was a full roofing strip, refurbishment, clean and refit. This involved painstakingly removing every individual pan tile, and delicately scrubbing with a wire brush to remove all the accumulated moss, lichen and debris that built up over the years.
As you can see the roof had years of built up moss and lichen to remove, which would have to be completed without damaging any of the tiles or underlying roof structure. We then set to work removing all the tiles and old worn battening and prepared to fit all new underlay underlay and timber, giving this roof a whole new lease of life.
With the majority of the new underlay and battens fitted it was time to access the job so far, and see how we are getting on. I think Franks expression sums it up perfectly! dont you?
After lunch we had almost completed the underlay and it was time to start thinking about refitting the tiles, one by one. As you see below Frank is using some ridge tiles to hold the underlay tight as he fits the last few battens.
As well as stripping and replacing all the tiles we also cleaned and tidied up the verges on the gable end. This had also had its fair share of weathering over the years and was completely covered in lichen, which had to be removed. As we had nice clean tiles going back on the roof we also replaced all the mortar in the verges.
With the clean tiles, fresh battens and a quick scrub this gable end was starting to shine, just as the sun poked its head from behind the clouds. What a fantastic transformation from the tired looking roof earlier.
Once all the tiles were cleaned and refitted it only left the ridge tiles, and lead flashing to go. All the ridge tiles were also hand brushed and carefully re-bedded back in, forming a straight ridge line once again. We also sorted the lead work around the fascias ready for installation of new guttering by the owner.
